Heartsease (Viola tricolor)

Interactions

Heartsease/Drug Interactions:
  • AntibioticsAntibiotics: Extracts and constituents of Viola tricolor have shown antimicrobial activity in vitro (3; 4).
  • Antineoplastic agentsAntineoplastic agents: Proteins from Viola tricolor have demonstrated cytotoxic activity against human cancer cell lines in vitro (5).
  • AnticoagulantsAnticoagulants: Heartsease contains coumarin (4). Theoretically, there may be additive or synergistic effects when heartsease preparations are used concomitantly with anticoagulant agents.
  • AspirinAspirin: Heartsease contains salicylates. Theoretically, there may be additive or synergistic effects when heartsease preparations are used concomitantly with salicylate-containing medications.
  • ExpectorantsExpectorants: Based on traditional use, heartsease may have additive effects with other herbs with expectorant effects. There is a lack of clinical data to support this.
  • Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents (NSAIDs)Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents (NSAIDs): Heartsease contains salicylates. Theoretically, there may be additive or synergistic effects when heartsease preparations are used concomitantly with salicylate-containing medications.

Heartsease/Herb/Supplement Interactions:
  • Antibacterials, antifungalsAntibacterials, antifungals: Extracts and constituents of Viola tricolor have shown antimicrobial activity in vitro (3; 4).
  • Anticoagulants and antiplateletsAnticoagulants and antiplatelets: Heartsease contains coumarin (4). Theoretically, there may be additive or synergistic effects when heartsease preparations are used concomitantly with anticoagulant agents.
  • Anti-inflammatoriesAnti-inflammatories: Heartsease contains salicylates. Theoretically, there may be additive or synergistic effects when heartsease preparations are used concomitantly with salicylate-containing medications.
  • AntineoplasticsAntineoplastics: Proteins from Viola tricolor have demonstrated cytotoxic activity against human cancer cell lines in vitro (5).
  • ExpectorantsExpectorants: Based on traditional use, heartsease may have additive effects with other herbs with expectorant effects. There is a lack of clinical data to support this.
  • Salicylate containing herbsSalicylate containing herbs: Heartsease contains salicylates. Theoretically, there may be additive or synergistic effects when heartsease preparations are used concomitantly with salicylate-containing medications.
  • Willow barkWillow bark: Heartsease contains salicylates. Theoretically, there may be additive or synergistic effects when heartsease preparations are used concomitantly with willow bark and other salicylate-containing herbs.

Heartsease/Food Interactions:
  • Insufficient available data.

Heartsease/Lab Interactions:
  • Bacterial culturesBacterial cultures: Extracts and constituents of Viola tricolor have shown antimicrobial activity in vitro (3; 4). Theoretically, heartsease may affect the results of bacterial cultures.
  • Cancer markersCancer markers: Proteins from Viola tricolor have demonstrated cytotoxic activity against human cancer cell lines in vitro (5). Theoretically, heartsease may affect the levels of cancer markers.
  • Coagulation panelCoagulation panel: Heartsease contains coumarin (4). Theoretically, consumption of heartsease preparations may affect coagulation panel tests.
